5th grade is beginning a unit on Geometry.  They're reviewing basic Geometry terms and creating a Geometry dictionary. In this unit we'll learn about polygons, circles, area, perimeter and concepts of volume.  Students will use protractors to measure and draw angles.

Prime Numbers and Prime Factorization

5th grade is learning to identify primes and composites and perform prime factorization.  The Sieve of Eratosthenes is a fun way we'll identify them to 100.  It's an ancient algorithm developed by a Greek Mathematician.

Ever wonder about the periodic table?  Dmitri Mendeleev, born on Feb. 8, 1834, has much to thank for our knowledge of the world around us.  He was a Russian chemist and inventor who created the periodic table of elements.

5th Grade Fun with Fractions

5-1 Math starts working with Fractions in Chapter 6 this week, first adding and subtracting.  Then we'll move into Chapters 7 and 8, multiplying and dividing.  We'll incorporate skills of reducing fractions, working with improper fractions and mixed numbers and solving word problems.
