Enjoy Summer Break

It was a great year in 5th grade Math.  Students were able to learn basic Integer operations as a bonus before we finished.  Continue to keep your Math skills fresh and be ready for an exciting Middle School experience next Fall.  It has been my pleasure to work with such great students.

Summer Math Practice

With the final week of school the 5th grade Math Students will take an End of Year Assessment test to see how much they've retained of their learnings.  Teachers will evaluate Math levels for next year in Middle School.  Be sure to visit the school website and look for the Summer Scholastics link to the 6th grade Math packet.  This is a great way to keep your skills fresh and be ready for next school year.

You've got a great point, when I look at it from that angle!

5th grade is beginning a unit on Geometry.  They're reviewing basic Geometry terms and creating a Geometry dictionary. In this unit we'll learn about polygons, circles, area, perimeter and concepts of volume.  Students will use protractors to measure and draw angles.

Prime Numbers and Prime Factorization

Image result for eratosthenes

5th grade is learning to identify primes and composites and perform prime factorization.  The Sieve of Eratosthenes is a fun way we'll identify them to 100.  It's an ancient algorithm developed by a Greek Mathematician.

Ever wonder about the periodic table?  Dmitri Mendeleev, born on Feb. 8, 1834, has much to thank for our knowledge of the world around us.  He was a Russian chemist and inventor who created the periodic table of elements.
